Timi Idris
Profile
Timi Idris, born in Lagos, Nigeria, is a Ph.D. student and SSHRC Doctoral Scholar at Dalhousie University. Her research is on the wellness of Black Women in Nonprofit organizations. Timi has completed a B.Sc. in Sociology from the University of Lagos and an M.A. in Criminology from Saint Mary’s University. She uses the spoken word as a tool for knowledge translation and to engage communities. Timi volunteers with the YWCA, the BIPOC Mentoring Academy, and the Racialized Student Academic Network. Recognized due to her community work as the 2021 Young Alumni of the Year at Saint Mary’s University and as one of Canada's 30 Young Impact Leaders in 2022, she advocates for increased Black representation in health professions. She is the Manager for the Promoting Leadership in health for African Nova Scotians program. Her research interests include social determinants of health, Black health, employee wellbeing and food insecurity. Timi enjoys reading, dancing (even without music), singing, and is fluent in English and Yoruba. By engaging with Scholars and Mentors through this scholarship program, she aims to deepen her understanding of strategies to make academia more accessible to the community, bridging personal and cultural divides to drive inclusive change, especially for the Black community.
