Yellowknife: Our first official Institute of Engaged Leadership
The Foundation community gathered for our first official Institute of Engaged Leadership from October 27th to November 1st 2019 in Yellowknife, NWT. Scholars, Mentors, and Fellows came together for a week of community-building and learning on the theme of Power & Knowledge. Canada’s North is an essential – and yet sometimes overlooked – part of the country where the intersection between power and knowledge has unique meaning.
Through a week of diverse teaching models by our Mentors and Fellows, the Scholars received leadership training, as part of the Foundation’s objective to foster leadership skills in outstanding, bold innovative researchers.
The Institutes place an accent on experiential learning for Scholars. The week included a number of field visits to locations including the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories, the Arctic Indigenous Wellness Foundation, Food Rescue Yellowknife, and the Hotiì ts-eeda Research Support Centre.
Two key highlights of the week included a keynote address by Indigenous Leadership & Education expert Gabrielle Scrimshaw, and a day-long visit to the Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning, a land-based learning organization which provided an outstanding series of experiences built around Indigenous traditional knowledge and history.
