Meaghan Thumath and Gillian McKay receive a medal of distinction for nursing

Meaghan Thumath, 2015 Scholar, and Gillian McKay, 2016 Scholar, were each awarded a Centenary Medal of Distinction as alumni of the University of British Columbia’s School of Nursing. Marking the 100th Anniversary of UBC’s School of Nursing, the Medal “serves to recognize individuals who have brought high honour to the school and to the profession of nursing, and who have made significant contributions to advance its vision, mission, and mandate.”

Meaghan Thumath is a PhD candidate at the University of Oxford and an adjunct professor at UBC’s School of Nursing. Her research addresses the impact of drug policy and child welfare systems on maternal mortality. She has provided technical assistance to international organizations such as WHO, UNAIDS, the World Bank, and UNDP.

Gillian McKay is a PhD candidate at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine where she is researching ways to preserve access to reproductive health services during infectious disease epidemics. She has worked in humanitarian, development and clinical spaces for the last 10 years.
