President's Message : Leadership in the spotlight

It has been a very busy month for the Foundation, and I am pleased to be writing to you with some great news. My team and I are back from a four-day stop in Halifax, where two Future Forums sessions were held, as well as a meeting of the Board of Directors and the Annual Meeting of the Members of the Foundation.

These gatherings constituted a milestone in the history of the Foundation, as they marked a close to John McCall MacBain’s simply remarkable term as Chair of the Board of Directors. John’s numerous accomplishments in this role, including the launch of our renewed mission, have brought us added hope and confidence as we look toward the future. I offer my wholehearted thanks to John for his brilliant legacy and for his deep commitment to our broader family which is the Foundation community.

The Foundation ups number of Doctoral Scholarships from 15 to 20

Each year, the Foundation awards doctoral scholarships to candidates from Canada and abroad researching one or more of the following themes: human rights and dignity, responsible citizenship, Canada and the world, and people and their natural environment. The three-year Scholarship program provides generous support for doctoral work in the form of a research stipend as well as funding for research-related travel.
Coast and Boat

Coastal knowledge and the rural experience

“A rising tide lifts all boats… as long as you have a boat”

A popular seafarers’ analogy was a central theme as academics and community leaders met at Memorial University in St. John’s for the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation’s Future Forums. While an appropriate metaphor for the place, it was a particularly fitting observation in the discussion on Inclusive Excellence and Engaged Leadership.

President's Message - Ending the year in a spirit of generosity

Ending the year in a spirit of generosity

It is hard to believe the end of 2018 is already here! Before joining family and friends for seasonal festivities or enjoying a well-deserved rest, I wanted to take one final opportunity this year to share the latest news from the Foundation with you.

Launch of our 2019 programs

The launch of our annual competitions on December 3rd generated a tremendously positive response. Thanks to each and every one of you who helped spread the word by sharing the news through your networks and expressed your enthusiasm for our programs.

As was noted the day of the launch, in addition to offering more doctoral scholarships (20 instead of 15), the development of Scholars’ leadership skills will play a greater role in our 2019 programs. Mentors and Fellows will play a key role in this regard, as they will be called upon to share their knowledge, skills and aptitudes with the Scholars during our Institutes for Engaged Leadership. In 2019-20, the events will take place in Washington, D.C. and Yellowknife (NWT), under the scientific theme Power & Knowledge. Our community retreat in Quebec’s Eastern Townships in May will also offer a taste of what the Institutes for Engaged Leadership have in store.

President's Message - New Year, New Ideas: A time for coming together

New Year, New Ideas: A time for coming together

More than 30 of our community members – mainly Scholars but also several current and alumni Mentors and Fellows – took part in New Year, New Ideas 2019 at the Foundation office on January 25th. We had the grand pleasure of having Dr. Joe MacInnis with us. He is a passionate deep-sea diver, author and has been a member of the Foundation since its creation. Dr. Joe offered vividly told stories of time he spent with Pierre Elliott Trudeau, their relationship built around loyalty and trust – and diving. It was also an opportunity to reflect on the word leadership, and its many different meanings. In his book, Deep Leadership, Dr. Joe talks about leadership in high-risk contexts. He writes: "Deep leaders help their team partners navigate turbulent seas of change. They press for new skills, new behaviors, and new directions.” How inspiring for all of us who are part of a Foundation seeking bold innovation!
